Time 100; Mia Wasikowska and Sue Savage-Rumbaugh

Mia Wasikowska
Mia Wasikowska is an actress, best know in her roles as Alice in Alice in Wonderland (2010) and as Joni, a teenager in the movie The Kids are Alright. Time put her on the list for a few reasons. The first is she is very, very talented. She was born is Australia but can pull of an english and an american accent without fault. The second reason is her attitude. She is humble and shy, but very observant. They didn't say much else, almost vague in the article. Though I believe she is smart and talented I don't really understand why she is on the list. There are so many other talented people out there that deserved to be on the list and I don't believe that she is one of them. I also think that Time did a crappy job of making me think other wise.

 Sue Savage-Rumbaugh
Sue Savage-Rumbaugh is a scientist working to break the wall between man and ape. She is teaching Bonobos (an ape closely related to us) how to communicate. Using pictures and signs the apes are learning to communicate with humans. She is also trying to advocate the conservation for these animals and has a recreated habitat called The Great Ape Trust. I think she has a rightful place on that list for many reasons. Not only is she an advocate of the Bonobos she is also teaching them to communicate, which may someday lead to a understanding of bonds between man and ape.

Green Terrorism; Love the Planet, Kill the Infidels

While sitting in the Kindergarden I picked up an interesting magazine called UTNE Reader, an alternative press magazine (Think Huffington post). While flipping through I found a strange article about Green Terrorists. Thats right. The terrorists are goin' green. "Some of the most recognizable militants in the Islamic world have recently made statements linking the peace and stability with healthy ecosystems" states the Earth Island Journal, the first magazine to post the story. Last October, Hezbollah guerrilla leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah said this; “The climate threat today,” he told his listeners, according to Reuters, “is among the biggest threats faced by mankind.”
Where does that leave people like me? I personally am all for going green. I changed the light bulbs in my house and changed my shower head to conserve water. Now all the climate change deniers are going to say I sympathize with Terrorists. But all I have to say is that I am truly embarrassed to say that the terrorist beat us. They were faster about catching on to the truth about global warming, faster than most of the american citizens. But we can still win in the end! If the US can get their "green" on, we can truly win.

My Superly Super Power

I've never wanted to be a super hero. What's so cool about saving screaming people, and almost dying all the time? Even if I don't want to be a hero, a super power would be nice. I've always wanted the power to close and open doors, and turn on and off lights, both from across the room. It would be so useful! You could save energy by turning off lights and scare people by opening and closing doors! Though this is a bit weird I think that they both would be very useful. I would also like the power to hold me breath indefinitely underwater. I could go swimming and never have to come up for air. I could go snorkeling and stay under and I could never drown (which I always believed would be the worst way to die).

Though weird choices, I I would use my powers for my self and not hurt anyone. And who knows, maybe I could save a drowning kid or something.

The Moral Dilemma; The Controversy of Abortion

I am very open about how I feel about abortion. I personally feel that that is always a choice between a woman and her doctor and shouldn't be controlled by anyone who doesn't understand the situation she is in. Though it maybe sad to think of abortion, that baby isn't a person yet. Yes, it is human, but they will never start life a a person or a soul. Can you kill something that hasn't started life?

I understand why people become upset when it comes to this topic. They see it as murder, and morally wrong. I respect this opinion but I don't agree with it. I also disagree with the people who want to cut funding for Planned Parenthood. Planned Parenthood isn't a place to get abortions, but rather a place to get a service for someone of low income. It is a place where they can comfortably treat, learn about, and prevent STDs, and a place where women can get a mammogram for a reduced price. If they cut funding for Planned Parenthood then they will be cutting a service that helps keep low income populations health, and also help prevent pregnancy and STDs from spreading.

This American Life; My Favorite Radio Show

Hello, my name is Hailey, and I am a NPR nerd. I grew up listening to NPR my whole life. When my generation was in love with Jesse Mccartney, I was stuck in my car listening to radio shows with my dad. No music, no fun, just NPR, and I hated it! I despised NPR, and changed the station at any chance. But even during times of hate toward National Public Radio I would always stop to listen to This American Life. It's a show about life, loss and what it means to live. They had stories about growing up, living big, and falling down. The show is hosted by Ira Glass, who has inspired me through many stories. There are only a few that really stick in my mind, stories that inspire me each time I hear them. One of my favorite (and resent) broadcasts was about kid politics. They asked kids, middle schoolers from across the country, what they think should happen with our current economic and foreign problems. As each student gave an answer about foreign policies and wars the adults would give back a problem that would come along with that solution. The only thing they didn't expect is the fact that some of the students actually created solid solutions. Middle schoolers came up with answers that college professors thought were solid ideas. The one that the show looked at was how to keep teachers employed during this economic upset. Sadly, I don't think the right people listened to this podcast, enough to help with our situation with our teachers.
